Shakudo is the use of mixed metal alloys and was originally used in Japanese armor and swords. Artisans would sometimes remove the Shakudo plaques from the armor and incorporate it into jewelry or art. It has become very collectible and quite unusual.
This unique and very substantial pendant from the Victorian?(ca1880) era is a wonderful example of the Shakudo art form! The pendant has a very large, elongated shape with raised 3-dimensional detail. The design features?a charming frog that is pictured jumping from a lily pad. Two beautiful flowers rest atop the lily pad, with gorgeous gold accents that stand out perfectly against the bronze background. The mixed hues of the various metals look wonderful together and?bring the image to life. A dark patina rests within the grooves below the surface, adding wonderful depth to the design. The piece hangs from a large gold ring at the top, allowing it to be hung and worn from your favorite chain. A true work of art, this artistic?and very unusual Shakudo pendant?would make a marvelous addition to any collection!
Measurements: The?pendant hangs 5 1/4" long (including the bail), measures 1 3/4" at the widest point, and 1/2" at the thickest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant?is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the bronze Shakudo setting or gold accents.?The gold bail?is secure and in good working condition.
